Statements from Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray on State Assembly Passage of Reproductive Health Act

January 17, 2017

Statement from Mayor Bill de Blasio:

"New York City is using every tool to safeguard the lives, rights and dignity of women. So, I want thank our State Assembly for passing legislation that will protect the Constitutional right to reproductive healthcare in New York and move state abortion law out of the criminal code and into Public Health Law where it belongs. We must do all we can to uplift our mothers, wives, daughters and sisters. I urge the State Senate to follow the Assembly and pass the Reproductive Health Act.

Statement from First Lady Chirlane McCray:

"Women's access to healthcare is under attack by extremists in Washington, and now is the time for leaders in cities and states across the nation to raise their voices and take action. I thank the State Assembly for honoring a woman's fundamental right to control and care for her own body. When women succeed, families succeed. When families succeed, our city succeeds. I strongly urge the New York State Senate to follow the Assembly in passing this legislation. Reproductive health is not a privilege. It is a right protected by the Constitution."
