Municipal Solid Waste Composting, 2004

The 2004 New York City MSW Composting Report: Summary of Research Project and Conceptual Pilot Facility Design presents the results of extensive research exploring the state of the alternative waste disposal method of municipal solid waste (MSW) composting.

The research concluded that MSW composting is a promising tool for waste management because it can exist alongside recycling operations, take advantage of certain collection efficiencies, and recover recyclables discarded with trash. While key questions about the feasibility of MSW composting in New York City remain to be investigated, the report proposes that the City seriously consider building a pilot facility to learn more about MSW-composting technology.
