The 2001 report, New York City Recycling in Context, examines the success of NYC’s mandatory recycling program, which led to an all-time high recycling rate of 20% in the year 2000.
DSNY made recycling commonplace by providing New York City with full and frequent recycling service and educating residents on the importance of recycling. New York City Recycling in Context evaluates the City’s progress in the context of other U.S. cities and takes into account factors in NYC such as the predominance of apartment buildings and the lack of yards. The report employs the various measures and calculations used by other cities to create a uniform field of examination. When compared by this method, NYC’s recycling rates are ahead of, or on par with, other cities throughout the country.
