Commercial Organics On-Site Processing Registration

As of July 19, 2016, certain New York City businesses are required by law to separate their organic waste. For more information visit the business food scraps + yard waste page.

Businesses covered by the Commercial Organics Rules that choose to process any amount of organic material on-site must register with the NYC Department of Sanitation within 30-days of installing on-site processing equipment. The following on-site processing methods are acceptable per the Commercial Organics Rules: composting, aerobic digestion and anaerobic digestion. Please note that for these methods, supplemental processing and/or transport may be required. You may register using the online form below or download and print the registration form here.

Businesses are not required to complete this registration form if all source separated organic material is processed for beneficial use off-site in accordance with the Commercial Organics Rules. Any on-site processing method must be in accordance with local, state, and federal law.

Any on-site processing with aerobic/anaerobic digestion must be connected to a grease interceptor and is subject to inspection by DEP. All food service establishments using one of these on-site processing methods must contact DEP for appropriate sizing requirements.
