People’s Republic of China National People’s Congress Environmental Protection and Resource Conservation Committee (EPRCC) Will Tour Staten Island Bluebelt

Date/Time: Monday, November 20, 2006; 1:30 – 4 pm
Location: Staten Island Bluebelt
(Delegates and reporters meet at 1:30 pm at Fingerboard Road just after the toll plaza of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge; from there proceed to first stop at intersection of Rockland Avenue and Meisner Avenue in the Richmond Creek Bluebelt for a tour of the completed project. If time permits a drive-by of the proposed Mid Island Bluebelts will follow.

Background:

The goal of the tour is to provide information for members of the ERCC about outstanding examples of natural resource management, model implementation sites, funding for ecosystem services and to meet with officials in each country to discuss mutual interests related to the environment.  The award-winning and cost-effective storm water management system on Staten Island that demonstrates how wetland preservation can be economically prudent and environmentally responsible is of great interest to the ERCC delegation. 

Conservation International has been working closely with the People’s Republic of China’s to facilitate this visit for the ERCC, the highest level legislative body responsible for drafting national environmental laws in China.
