MAYOR GIULIANI AND OFFICE OF IMMIGRANT AFFAIRS
DIRECTOR ANGELICA TANG RELEASE DIRECTORY
OF SERVICES TO IMMIGRANTS IN NEW YORK CITY

Directory Lists and Cross-References
Hundreds of Community-Based Organizations

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani-joined by Angelica O. Tang, Executive Director of the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs and Language Services; Christa M. Stewart, Director of the New York Immigration Hotline; and Arie Bierman, Assistant Executive Vice President of the New York Association for New Americans-today released a new edition of the Directory of Services to Immigrants: A Guide to Community-Based Organizations in New York City. This detailed directory, prepared by the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs and Language Services, provides a comprehensive listing of about 300 community-based organizations in New York City that provide services to immigrants.

"The Directory of Services to Immigrants demonstrates how community-based organizations can work in partnership with government not only for the benefit of immigrants but also for all New Yorkers," Mayor Giuliani said. "The Directory is unique because it is accessible to both immigrants and workers in community-based organizations. Immigrants have always been a positive force in New York City's economic and cultural growth, and the agencies listed in this Directory help integrate them into the life of the City."

The Directory lists agencies by borough, and contains complete information about each organization-including location, telephone and fax numbers, hours of operation, access by public transportation, services available on-site, and also the types of services for which information and referrals are provided.

The Directory also informs consumers if a particular agency has licensed legal, medical and mental health practitioners on-site; if it is accredited with the U.S. Bureau of Immigration Appeals (BIA); what populations it serves; the geographical area it serves; and what languages are spoken by agency staff members. In addition, the Directory cross-lists agencies with licensed professionals on-site by type of professional, languages spoken, major services provided, and includes an alphabetical listing of all listed agencies.

Executive Director Angelica O. Tang said, "The information presented in this Directory clearly shows how, by the quantity and quality of services provided to immigrants, New York City is committed to their well-being. The flow of immigrants to the city has increased in recent years and these community-based organizations have been critical to the health of our City and the diversity and vitality of our neighborhoods. The details contained in the Directory of Services to Immigrants are an essential starting point in understanding how the City has responded to recent flows of immigrants."

The Directory can be purchased at CityStore, North Lobby, One Centre Street, Manhattan, Monday-Friday, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Telephone orders accepted Monday-Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at (212) 669-8246.
