MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT
NAMES QUEENS AVENUE AFTER MONSIGNOR FRANK BULOVAS

-Remarks by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws-

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 731, sponsored by Council Members McCaffrey, Koslowitz, Leffler and Marshall, would add, through the posting of an additional sign, the name "Monsignor Frank Bulovas Avenue" on Perry Avenue between 64th Street and Remsen Place, in Queens.

The Reverend Monsignor Frank Bulovas was born of Lithuanian parentage outside of Chicago on April 21, 1916. Upon his reaching school age, the Monsignor's parents moved to Brooklyn and he attended Cathedral High School. After high school he enrolled in Marianapolis College in Connecticut. He then attended Marian Hills Seminary in Clarendon Hills, Illinois, and was ordained a priest on August 8, 1943.

After serving several assignments in Brooklyn he became Assistant Pastor at the Roman Catholic Church of the Transfiguration in Maspeth and later went on to become pastor. On July 3, 1982, he was elevated` to the rank of Monsignor. He spent a total of 41 years at the Church of the Transfiguration, serving the last 19 years as pastor. During his time at the Church of the Transfiguration, Monsignor Bulovas was actively involved in community affairs, most notably in the Catholic War Veterans and the Knights of Lithuania. On March 19, 1999, Monsignor Bulovas passed away.

In recognition of his 41 years of service to the Maspeth community, it is fitting that Perry Avenue, between 64th Street and Remsen Place be named "Monsignor Frank Bulovas Avenue."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
