Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and City Council Speaker Peter Vallone today entered
into a friendly wager on the outcome of this weekend's subway series between
their respective favorite baseball teams -- the New York Yankees and the New
York Mets. The teams will face off against one another in the first of a four
game series tonight at Shea Stadium. On Saturday afternoon the teams will play
their second game at 1:00 PM at Shea Stadium and then travel to Yankee Stadium
to play their third game, which is a rescheduled game that was cancelled due
to rain when the two teams last met in June. Their fourth and final game will
be played Sunday evening at Shea Stadium. The terms of the wager are as follows:
Should the Mets lose:
Should the Yankees lose:
"This is going to be a great weekend for New York baseball fans as we
watch the World Champion New York Yankees battle it out with their cross-town
rivals the New York Mets," said Mayor Giuliani. "Unlike the last series,
when only two games were played because the third was cancelled due to rain,
this weekend we will be able to watch four great games in just three days. On
Saturday afternoon baseball fans will be able to board the number seven train
to Queens, and at the conclusion of the game, board the number four train and
head to the Bronx for the second game of the day's double-header. I have no
doubt that this weekend's showdown between the Yankees and the Mets will be
a preview of this year's World Series."
Speaker Vallone said, "The next three days will be a truly memorable event
for the City and I want all New Yorkers to enjoy it. I look forward to seeing
the Mets banner flying over City Hall."
