MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL GRANTING PARTIAL REAL-PROPERTY TAX
EXEMPTION TO GOLD STAR PARENTS

Remarks by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The first bill before me today is Introductory Number 833, sponsored by Speaker Vallone. This legislation would grant a partial real-property tax exemption to Gold Star Parents. Gold Star Parents are the mothers and fathers of Americans killed while in military service for this country during wartime.

The bill would grant Gold Star Parents a 15% exemption from the real property tax. Gold Star Parents whose son or daughter received a commendation would be eligible for an additional 10% exemption.

Of course, no amount of monetary compensation can ever make up for the sorrow suffered by parents that have lost their children in combat. However, by conferring this special benefit, we honor and remember those that have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
