STATEMENT OF MAYOR GIULIANI ON THE PASSING
OF FORMER MAYOR JOHN LINDSAY

Mayor John Lindsay and I shared a common bond-we were elected Republican Mayors in a largely Democratic City. But beyond that, we shared a love for the City of New York, it's people, and the government that serves them.

I remember the day after I was elected Mayor. Despite the fact that he wasn't feeling well, John Lindsay invited me to lunch. He was very generous with his time, and gave me advice and counsel that I will never forget.

Some months after I became Mayor, John Lindsay and his family accepted my invitation to lunch at Gracie Mansion. It was the first time he had been back in many years. I was glad I was able to return in some measure the kindness he had shown me.

And in 1995 I was proud to appoint him Special Counsel to the New York City Commission for the United Nations, and also President of the Sister City Program-posts through which Mayor Lindsay was able to continue his distinguished service to the City of New York.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to Mayor Lindsay's wife Mary, and his children Katherine, Margie, Anne and John, Jr.

John Lindsay's service and dedication defined an era. He will be remembered, and he will be missed.
