MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL RENAMING SECTION OF
WATERS PLACE IN THE BRONX "HERB ROSENBLATT PLACE"

Remarks by Mayor Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The first bill before me, Introductory Number 839, sponsored by Council Members Provenzano, Espada and Golden, would add the name Herb Rosenblatt Place to Waters Place, between Eastchester Road and Westchester Avenue, in the Bronx.

Herb Rosenblatt was born in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx in 1948. He attended local public schools and went on to graduate from Long Island University in 1968. In 1972, Herb became involved with the Special Olympics.

From 1972 to 1991, Herb Rosenblatt assisted dozens of developmentally disabled children and adults to pursue their athletic dreams through the Special Olympics. Herb started the first after school training program for Special Olympics athletes known as the Bronx Special Olympics Training Club. In addition, he served as first vice-chairman of the board for Special Olympics New York and as co-chairman of the New York Special Olympics 25th Anniversary Committee.

Unfortunately, Herb Rosenblatt passed away in 1991.

Therefore, in recognition of Herb Rosenblatt's tireless efforts on behalf of the Special Olympics and his dedication to Special Olympics athletes across the City and State, it is fitting that Waters Place, between Eastchester Road and Westchester Avenue, be named "Herb Rosenblatt Place."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
