CITY RELEASES LATEST EMPLOYMENT DATA INDICATING
JOB GROWTH IN CITY DECLINED SLIGHTLY IN JUNE;

NEW YORK CITY CONTINUES TO OUTPACE THE NATION IN PRIVATE SECTOR EMPLOYMENT

City Added 4,500 Jobs Per Month On Average During First Six Months of 2001;
Unemployment Figures Edged Up to 5.3%.

The latest Employment / Unemployment figures released today by the State Department of Labor shows that New York City added 4,500 private sector jobs each month for the first six months of 2001, on average. The report also indicated that private employment grew by 1.6% year-over-year since June 2000, outpacing the nation which grew by 0.5%. Today's report also found that New York City experienced a slight decline of 1,100 private sector jobs in June.

"The City has been successful in bucking a weakening national economy for the first six months of the year," said Mayor Giuliani. "We added 4,500 jobs per month on average in the first half of 2001, and private employment rose by 1.6% since June 2000, far outpacing the nation. The slight down tick in job growth in June indicates that the City is in a stronger position than the rest of the nation."

Today's report also indicated that the City's unemployment ticked up slightly from 5.2% in May to 5.3% (seasonally adjusted) in June.
