NYC.GOV TAKES FIRST PLACE IN "BEST OF THE WEB" CONTEST

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced that NYC.gov -- the New York City government website -- earned the local government "Best of the Web" honors in a contest conducted by the Center for Digital Government and Government Technology magazine. According to the Center, government websites were judged on their innovation and use of Web-based online technology to deliver government services, efficiency and time saved, economy and money saved, and functionality of improved citizen access.

"I am pleased that NYC.gov has been recognized for putting City government at the public's fingertips," Mayor Giuliani said. "Our website offers the public information and interactive services, so that citizens can interact with City government online, rather than by standing in line. Whether you need to pay a parking ticket, get a birth certificate, or check traffic conditions on our roads, NYC.gov is your one-stop portal for online City services and information. With the recent addition of CAPSTAT data to the website, NYC.gov is making New York City government more accessible than ever for the public to examine and understand how the City delivers services. It's only fitting that in the 'City that never sleeps,' our government is available 24 hours a day with online services and information for New Yorkers, businesses, and tourists."

A Best of the Web judge and Executive Director of the Center, Cathilea Robinett said, "New York City has an extremely robust site. It is one of the few local government sites with a citizen customization component. It is easy to navigate and the section titled, 'I want to' is perfect for intuitive use."

With more than 30,000 pages of content, NYC.gov provides over 100 online transactional services to its citizens. As NYC.gov continues to expand its information content and number of transactional services, the website has seen a striking increase in use. In FY 2001, NYC.gov experienced over 52.4 million page views, more than doubling the number of page views in FY 1999.

"I want to congratulate the staff at the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications, the Mayor's Office of Operations, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Technology Steering Committee, and all the Commissioners who are responsible for creating and maintaining what is recognized as the top city website," Mayor Giuliani added.

Allan Dobrin, Commissioner for the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunication said, "This award is a testament to the creativity, collaboration and hard work of all New York City agencies in their on-going efforts to make more City services available on the Internet. Those who share in this recognition not only include many of New York City's information technology professionals but also the many agency managers who continue to re-engineer their business processes to effectively leverage web based technologies. Last, I would like to thank Mayor Giuliani and Deputy Mayor Joe Lhota for their vision and leadership which in many ways is the most critical aspect of our success."

This year's contest marks the third time that New York City has received "Best of the Web" recognition. In 1997, New York City earned first place, and in 1996 the City took third place. Also receiving honors in this year's "Best of the Web" contest were: Montgomery County, MD in second place; Conyers, GA in third place; and Miami-Dade County, FLA in fourth place.
