GOVERNOR PATAKI AND MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCE OPENING OF "TWIN TOWERS JOB CENTER"
TO HELP THOSE AFFECTED BY THE ATTACKS FIND JOBS

Center and Hotlines Will Connect Individuals and Employers

Governor George E. Pataki and Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced the creation of the Twin Towers Job Center, a partnership of State and City government, working with the private sector, to connect individuals displaced or unemployed as a result of the World Trade Center attacks with temporary and permanent jobs and other benefits.

"As New York City continues to mourn our profound loss, we're committed to moving forward," Mayor Giuliani said. "Our goal is to help as many New Yorkers as possible who are ready to return to work find jobs as soon as possible, and provide immediate access to the other help they may need. I want to thank the state and federal governments, as well as our private sector partners, for their cooperation in helping to coordinate this important effort."

"The Job Center is further evidence that nothing will stop New York from rebuilding and growing even stronger than before," Governor Pataki said. "The companies that are ready to hire those displaced by the tragedy deserve our thanks. They exemplify the united spirit of New York and the nation."

The Twin Towers Job Center will be located in Jamaica, Queens (168-46 91st Avenue, accessible by the F and E trains), and will begin operation tomorrow, Monday, September 17, 2001. The Center will operate from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends. The Center will work immediately to place individuals affected by the attacks in temporary and permanent employment, and to provide them with other assistance that meets their needs-including unemployment insurance, survivor benefits, child care, transportation and temporary cash assistance.

The Center will be staffed by the City Human Resource Administration, the State Department of Labor, and the Consortium for Worker Education, a non-profit organization that has begun actively soliciting temporary job opportunities from employers across the City.

The Twin Towers Job Bank will receive job postings from companies who wish to hire affected employees. To place openings in the job bank so that displaced workers can be matched to these opportunities, companies can call either the State hotline at (800) I LOVE NY or the City's Economic Development Hotline at (718) 630-2457.

People seeking jobs as a result of the tragedy should call the Twin Towers Job Link Hotline at (718) 557-1332, which will operate daily beginning Monday, September 17, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The hotline will assess callers' needs, provide information on available jobs and other employment-related services, and direct callers to more than 30 City, State and private employment assistance centers throughout the five boroughs, including the Twin Towers Job Center.

Job placement assistance and referral will also be available at the Family Assistance Center at Pier 94, at 54th Street and the West Side Highway in Manhattan.
