MAYOR GIULIANI PRESENTS AWARDS TO TOP HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATING SENIORS; SALUTES ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY

City Hall - Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today saluted the academic achievements, leadership abilities and community service of top graduating seniors from the City's Public High Schools. During a ceremony at the Public Hearing Chamber, the Mayor was joined by Deputy Mayor for Education and Human Services Ninfa Segarra and Chancellor Rudy Crew to present the 1996 Distinguished Graduates Awards to top graduating seniors from every high school in the public school system.

"These students have captured the true spirit of learning and achievement," said Mayor Giuliani. "They are our hope for the future...our hope to maintain and expand New York City's worldwide reputation for innovation, creativity and drive. Because we often hear negative stories about young people, it is imperative to emphasize that the vast majority of young people in our city are concerned about their education, their peers and their community.

"As our world becomes more and more sophisticated, we must ensure that our children have the ability to lead our country into a competitive role in the coming century," noted the Mayor. "As I look at these students' imagination, perseverance, hard work and community spirit and leadership, I know that we can look forward to the future with confidence."

Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra said, "In honoring these students, we also honor their principals and teachers. They taught these young men and women the lessons they need to compete and succeed. But we also honor their families because it is in the home where children learn to develop the inner strength and drive to succeed in school and throughout their lives."

"You represent the best and the brightest graduates of our public schools," said Chancellor Rudy Crew. "Your commitment to academic excellence, leadership and community service is commendable. Your achievements are the result of a tremendous investment of time and effort. On behalf of the entire school system, I congratulate you and wish you well in your future endeavors."

The students were presented with Certificates of Merit and a $250 check courtesy of Fleet Bank. Seven students were selected as "Top Student" from each High School Superintendency. The students were selected on their meritorious academic record, leadership abilities and service to their communities. The "Top Students" were selected through the joint collaboration of Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra, Dr. Irene Impellizzeri and the Student Advisory Members of the Board of Education.
