“I’d like to thank the City Parks Foundation for their contributions and dedication to the City’s children,” Mayor Giuliani said. “ The One Day Tournaments are a terrific way to make sure all children are not only safe, but also entertained during the hot summer months. All New Yorkers should take advantage of New York City’s many beautiful parks which are safer and cleaner than ever before.”
“The City parks have terrific playgrounds, ballfields, gardens and trails -- not to mention concerts and performances throughout the City,” said Commissioner Stern. “They are a great place for fun, recreation and relaxation during the summer months.”
At this afternoon’s event more than 150 children participated in their own One Day Tournament and were entertained by Sesame Street’s Elmo, whose appearance was made possible by Children Television Workshop and Sony Wonder.
The tournaments, which are open to children of all ages, will feature magicians, puppeteers and musicians, free refreshments, T-shirts and prizes. Children will participate in a variety of activities like potato sack races, in-line skating, scooter races, basketball, jumping rope, board games and hoola hoops. More than 1,500 children and adults are expected to participate in the summer-long tournaments. Starting July 13 in Queens’ C.C. Moore Park, the events will be held every Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM and conclude September 14 in Brooklyn’s Maria Hernandez Park. The schedule for the One Day Tournaments follows:
