MAYOR GIULIANI COMMENTS ON CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL OF BUDGET MODIFICATION TO IMPLEMENT THE CITY FINANCIAL PLAN

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani released the following statement this afternoon concerning City Council approval of the budget modification to implement into the FY'97 City Budget:

"I congratulate the City Council for swiftly passing the budget modification and agreeing with this Administration on the best course for implementing a budget that is fiscally prudent. With today's vote, the Council has become the Administration's partner in preparing to meet the fiscal future needs of the City.

Today we say good-bye to the old way of doing financial planning in the City. In the past, extra unanticipated revenues were spent with little worry about the consequences. With this vote, the City Council has rejected this philosophy. Together we have acted responsibly to produce a budget that allows the City to reduce long term risks and have produced a budget that is in the best interest of the City."
