MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES DEBUT OF NEW YORK CITY'S COMMISSION TO COMBAT FAMILY VIOLENCE WEBPAGE ON THE INTERNET

Website Provides Important Information and Phone Numbers for Victims of Domestic Violence

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced the debut of the City's first-ever Commission to Combat Family Violence Webpage on the Internet. The site, which began operation on January 6, 1999, provides important information for victims of domestic violence and facts about the City's efforts to reduce domestic violence, including statistics and a phone number for victims seeking help.

The new webpage is accessible at www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/ccfv/home.com or through the New York City homepage at www.ci.nyc.ny.us.

"The debut of this important webpage adds one more tool to the City's fight against domestic violence," Mayor Giuliani said. "The webpage provides the City's domestic violence hotline number, 1-800-621-HOPE, as well as up-to-date information about the City's domestic violence strategy. Using Internet technology is just another example of this Administration's commitment to combat domestic violence on every possible front."

According to Maria Mitchell, Chair of the Mayor's Commission to Combat Family Violence, "This new webpage is a forum for everyone to learn about the vital work that the Commission has been doing since 1994. We hope that as more people access this important tool more people will become involved in this important initiative."

The introduction of the webpage follows a successful public education campaign aimed at reducing teenage relationship abuse.

Rhea Mallett, Executive Director of the Commission to Combat Family Violence, said, "The webpage offers us a new tool to increase awareness about domestic violence, which is critical to change the prevailing public perception regarding this crime."

Mayor Giuliani created the Mayor's Commission to Combat Family Violence by Executive Order on April 26, 1994 to create a coordinated, comprehensive strategy of municipal and public-private initiatives to combat this hidden crime.
