"I thank Cablevision and James Dolan for their commitment to improve the education of New York City children," Mayor Giuliani said. "It is public/private partnerships like this that help us to maximize the benefits of programs like Project Smart Schools and give our students the valuable opportunity to learn how to handle the tools and technology of tomorrow."
Cablevision's New York City education program will provide broadband communications links through its fiber optic network for each of the 522 schools in the company's franchise area in Brooklyn and the Bronx. The centers will help teachers, students and parents to develop programs that take advantage of the connection between Technology Learning Centers and their fast access to digital information.
The Mayor participated in a live demonstration of the school's distance learning capability, which electronically linked the auditorium at I.S. 220 with classrooms at The Bronx High School of Science and at the Samuel Gompers Vocational and Technological High School in the Bronx, the two other schools with Technology Learning Centers.
Cablevision CEO James Dolan said, "Cablevision's educational initiative is as much about the learning experience as it is about technology. Our commitment is based on making sure that teachers and students in New York City schools not only have the most advanced high speed technology, but the ability to use the technology in a way that will give students the best possible chance to succeed in a new digital century. We share the Mayor's strong commitment to the future of the children of New York."
