MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES RELIEF EFFORT FOR VICTIMS OF THE CONFLICT IN KOSOVO

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today called on all New Yorkers to support in the collection of humanitarian relief for Albanians affected by the conflict in Kosovo and other sensitive areas in the Yugoslavian Republic. The Mayor was joined by members of the Albanian community in New York, including Albanian Ambassador to the United Nations, Agim Nesho.

"I know that many New Yorkers with roots in this part of Europe have very strong feelings about NATO's actions. Some want the bombing to stop, and some believe that this firm action against Milosevic's aggression is long overdue. But we all agree on one thing: thousands are suffering due to the conflict. New York City has a long tradition of helping those in need and at this difficult time, our generosity and support for the Albanian people can save lives," Mayor Giuliani said.

The Mayor continued, "Beginning today, all New York City Firehouses throughout the five boroughs will serve as drop-off points for items that are urgently needed in the Balkans. I urge all New Yorkers to bring their donations to their nearest Firehouse and join me in extending our support and prayers to the men and women of our Armed Forces, who are risking their lives to bring peace to this region.

"I would also like to thank everyone who has joined in this important humanitarian effort, including Laura Maioglio, owner of Barbetta restaurant in Manhattan, who has generously agreed to donate 10 percent of all checks to the Kosovo refugees."

The Mayor was also joined by Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen, and the Director of the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management Jerome Hauer, whose agencies will coordinate the relief effort. Queens Borough President Claire Shulman was also present to lend her support to the effort.

The most needed articles are drinking water, canned food and non-perishable goods. To make a monetary donation, please call the Kosovar Relief Fund USA, Inc. at 212-753-2200.
