MAYOR GIULIANI APPEALS TO NEW YORKERS TO ALLEVIATE SERIOUS BLOOD SHORTAGE IN THE METROPOLITAN AREA

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today u rged New Yorkers to donate blood at the nearest location of the New York Blood Center (NYBC), to help alleviate a serious blood shortage in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. The NYBC -- the largest community blood supply in the nation -- collects blood and blood components throughout New York City, Long Island, northern and central New Jersey and the Hudson Valley.

The Mayor was joined by Neal L. Cohen, M.D., Commissioner of New York City's Health Department; and Dr. Robert Jones, President of the New York Blood Bank.

"Blood is one of the most crucial life-saving resources at any given hospital in the nation," the Mayor said. "It is alarming to find out that only 2 percent of those eligible to donate blood participate in this process, creating a serious shortage that endangers the lives of thousands of people. I urge all New Yorkers who are eligible to donate blood and to do so as soon as possible. It can very well mean the difference between life and death for someone you don't know, as well as for someone you love."

New York Blood Center President Dr. Robert Jones said, "We currently have approximately a two-day supply of Type O blood -- the blood type most in demand -- and we need a five-day supply in order to satisfy over 200 hospitals in New York and New Jersey. We have been forced to reduce blood shipments to area hospitals. Therefore, I'm urging all those eligible to donate now to help avoid a very real health care crisis in our community."

Department of Health Commissioner Neal L. Cohen said, "Blood donations have saved countless lives over the years. It is perfectly safe to donate blood and it is one of the most critical, but simple, ways each of us can assist fellow New Yorkers."

Blood donors must be between the ages of 17 and 75, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good general health. The donation process takes about an hour and includes a free mini-medical exam.

Anyone eligible to donate blood should contact NYBC's hotline number:

1 (800) 933-BLOOD (2566) to find the most convenient donating location or to make an appointment. Walk-in donors are also welcome.
