MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES NEW YORK CITY'S JOB GROWTH HAS SURPASSED THE NUMBER OF JOBS LOST DURING LAST RECESSION

Private Sector Employment Up 75,900 Since Last May
City On Pace For Another Record Year

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced that, according to employment figures released today by the New York State Department of Labor, the City has now surpassed the number of jobs lost in the previous recession. Since last May private sector employment is up 75,900 jobs, or 2.6%.

"This is great news for New York City," said Mayor Giuliani. "Following the release of today's job numbers, New York City has now surpassed the number of private sector jobs lost in the last recession. The City's effort to create jobs for thousands of New Yorkers continues to pay off, with over 314,000 new private sector jobs created since December 1993. These figures confirm that our City's economy remains strong and will continue to produce jobs at a record pace.

"With today's numbers, New York City is on pace for another record year and is close to matching last year's job creation number, when the City experienced its strongest private sector job growth in over 40 years. New Yorkers should take pride in knowing that their City's dramatic economic growth serves as an inspiration for the rest of the State as well as for the rest of the nation," the Mayor concluded.

The April job figures show the City's unemployment rate was 6.6 percent, compared to 7.8 percent in May of last year and 10.2 percent in December 1993.
