Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Mayor Bill Campbell of Atlanta, Georgia, agreed on a double-or-nothing, winner-takes-all, wager on the outcome of the World Series Championship between the reigning World Champion New York Yankees and the Atlanta Braves. After losing a previous wager to Mayor Campbell, when the New York Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series, Mayor Giuliani decided to bet it all on the World Champion New York Yankees.
If the Yankees win back-to-back World Championships, for their 25th World Series Championship, Mayor Campbell owes Mayor Giuliani two slabs of ribs, two cases of Georgia peanuts, two cases of locally brewed Red Brick Ale and an autographed baseball from Hank Aaron. He also agrees to wear a Yankees baseball cap in public. Should the Braves win, Mayor Giuliani will send Mayor Campbell two cases of Brooklyn Lager Beer, two Junior's cheesecakes, four dozen bagels from H&H Bagels and an autographed baseball from Mets legend Tom Seaver. He also agrees to wear a Braves baseball cap in public.
"There's no way the Braves are going to beat the New York Yankees," said Mayor Giuliani. "The Mets played great baseball against the Braves and showed baseball fans around the country how tough they are, demonstrating the never-say-die attitude of New York sports teams. On Saturday the Yankees will show Atlanta who the World Champions are. I'm confident they'll win another World Championship and make sure that the World Series Championship trophy remains in New York City, The Baseball Capital of the World."
