If you think you have been exposed to HIV, go immediately to a clinic or emergency room and ask for PEP, or Post-Exposure Prophylaxis. PEP includes medicines that help prevent HIV infection.
Emergency PEP should be started right away, and no more than 36 hours after exposure. The doctor will help decide if PEP makes sense for you.
In New York State, most insurance plans including Medicaid cover PEP.
If you do not have insurance, there are medical clinics that can help you get PEP.
