Tax Preparation Assistance

Depending on your income, you may may be able to use NYC Free Tax Prep services, which include online and in-person filing. Services begin in January 2017. The tax filing deadline is Tuesday, April 18, 2017.

The online service provides step-by-step instructions to help you prepare and file your tax return. Experts are also available by phone to answer your questions.

NYC Free Tax Prep sites are available throughout the city and offer different options, including:

  • In-person assistance: At most sites, an IRS certified VITA/TCE volunteer preparer will prepare your taxes for you. At some sites, a volunteer will help you do your own taxes online.
  • Drop-off service: At some sites, you can drop off your tax documents and pick up the completed return later.

In general, to use a free site, you must:

  • Earn $54,000 or less if you have children.
  • Earn $30,000 or less if you do not have children.
  • Have a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.
  • Bring all relevant tax documents to the site.
  • Have a valid email address if you do your own taxes online with help.

Some sites may have different income eligibility requirements. You should ask the site for more details, including if the site offers language assistance or is wheelchair accessible.
