The City is performing an upgrade to the Tallman Island Wastewater Treatment Plant. The plant is one of 14 in New York City that treat wastewater before it is released into the surrounding waterways. Several changes to the public waterfront will occur because of this upgrade.
The dock next to Tallman Island will not be reopened for public access. The dock will be used instead to transport shipments of sludge produced at the Tallman plant to an off-site facility for processing. This is necessary in order to prevent nitrogen discharge into the water.
The City is erecting a construction fence at Powell's Cove Boulevard from 127th Street westward, toward the boatyard at 126th Street. This fence will be up temporarily as the City installs new equipment within the plant's grassed area to the west of the existing fence line. This is a temporary construction fence that will later be replaced by a permanent fence.
