The New York City Identification bill was signed into law by Mayor de Blasio on July 10, 2014. The Municipal ID program offers a photo identification card for ALL residents of New York City, regardless of immigration status. The card will not be available until January 1, 2015 and will be free for the first year.
To receive the card, individuals must present proof of their identity and proof of residency. The program will allow several different types of documents to be used as proof.
You should not attempt to buy or get a Municipal ID card until January of 2015. The Municipal ID application site locations will be announced before January of 2015.
The Municipal ID card will provide a series of benefits to ID cardholders when the program begins in January 2015. These benefits will include 1-year free membership at 33 of the City’s leading museums, zoos, concert halls, and botanical gardens. More details regarding the benefits associated with the Municipal ID card will be made available prior to the January 2015 launch.
