Enterovirus D68 is a virus that can cause respiratory illness. Most people who get infected with enteroviruses do not get sick. People who get sick from this virus can have respiratory problems, but severe cases that require hospitalization are rare. Symptoms can also include runny nose, sneezing, coughing and body aches.
There is no treatment for this and other enteroviruses, which likely spread through coughing, sneezing, or touching a surface that is contaminated with the saliva or mucus of an infected person.
Children with asthma appear to be at higher risk for breathing problems if infected with enterovirus.
