Mumps - Far Rockaway

There is a cluster of mumps cases in the Far Rockaway area of Queens.

Symptoms of mumps include:

  • Fever
  • Tiredness
  • Muscle aches
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swollen glands under the tongue, along the jaw, and in front of the ears.

To avoid getting sick, wash your hands often, cover your cough/sneeze, and do not share food, drinks or cigarettes with others.

Everyone needs two measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine shots. If you aren’t sure you have received the vaccine, check with your doctor.

People in Far Rockaway can get the vaccine at the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Centers. The vaccine is free, but people will be asked to pay a sliding scale fee for the visit.
