Statement From Mayor de Blasio on Cornell Tech Groundbreaking

June 16, 2015

Today, the city’s thriving tech ecosystem opens a new chapter. Cornell Tech comes to Roosevelt Island with a laudable mission to utilize technology and innovation to solve real-world problems and drive smart, powerful and equitable economic growth in New York City. Last year, more than half of Cornell Tech graduates stayed in New York City to launch their own companies or pursue positions in existing firms, further strengthening New York’s local tech ecosystem and bolstering our economy. Cornell Tech has shown a commitment to our youngest New Yorkers by partnering with dozens of local schools to bring tech education into the classroom. By bringing together academia and industry in the service of invention and innovation, Cornell Tech will provide a pathway to opportunity for thousands of New Yorkers. We also want to thank and recognize Mayor Bloomberg for his dedication and generosity to this project and this institution, which is serving to kickstart a new era of connectivity for this city. The City of New York is committed to a deep and ongoing partnership with Cornell Tech to inspire new minds to grow and thrive here, connect New Yorkers with good jobs, and provide a fresh link to the digital world.”
