Reading Adventure Night Promotes Literacy
Children in foster care, as well as children enrolled in EarlyLearn NYC and their parents and caregivers enjoyed a night of fun, games and reading at Reading Adventure Night at the Sony Wonder Technology Lab in New York City on Monday, November 4, 2013. Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) organized the event to reinforce the importance of reading to young children at bedtime. ACS Commissioner Ronald E. Richter spent time getting to know the children who were excited to meet him and share with him their love for reading. In addition, representatives from the New York Public Library (NYPL) were on hand to sign up children and caregivers for library cards.
Addressing the large turnout of parents and caregivers, Commissioner Richter said “By being here and reinforcing the importance of reading, you are setting an example for these young minds that will carry with them for years to come. We know that children who learn to read from a very early age are more likely to realize later school success, and graduate from high school.” Afterwards, using an e-Reader with the words projected on a screen the Commissioner read two stories to the children - “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” by Laura Joffe Numeroff, and “My Precious Baby Dear” by Andrea Elder. In each of the readings, Commissioner Richter received enthusiastic participation from the children, many reading along with him.
Commissioner Richter was joined by ACS Deputy Commissioners for Early Care and Education Myung J. Lee and Benita Miller, Family Permanency Services for the event. Approximately 250 attendees to the event were given all-access to the four-story, interactive technology and entertainment museum. Each child received a goody bag with a new book and set of pajamas. One lucky participant won a Kindle e-Reader as the prize for a raffle. The event received additional support from First Books, the Pajama Project, Inc., NYPL, and the Sony Foundation.
