This section provides summary demographic data for all of the approximate 36,000 NYPD officers currently in the Department.

How many current NYPD officers have ever received a CCRB complaint?

Around 40% of current NYPD officers have never received a CCRB complaint. Twenty percent have received one CCRB complaint, 12% have received two complaints, 8% have received three complaints, and 17% have received four or more complaints.


Note: This includes complaints received for any type of FADO allegation with any type of disposition (substantiated, unfounded, unsubstantiated and exonerated). Encounters may vary by assignment.

How many current NYPD officers have ever received at least one CCRB complaint with a substantiated allegation?

Out of the approximate 36,000 NYPD officers currently in the Department, around 3,600 (10%) officers have received at least one CCRB complaint with a substantiated allegation.  Ninety percent of officers currently in the Department have never received a complaint with a substantiated allegation.

Note: 1) An allegation is substantiated if misconduct is found to be improper based on a preponderance of the evidence. 2) "Complaint with at least one substantiated allegation" refers to a complaint in which the specific officer has received at least one substantiated allegation.

What is the gender breakdown of active NYPD officers?

Just over 80% of NYPD officers identify as male (83%) and 17% identify as female.

Out of the 20,613 NYPD Officers (as of August 29, 2016) who have at least one CCRB Complaint (57% of the force), 87% identify as male and 13% identify as female.

What is the highest educational level attained by active NYPD officers?

Just under half of NYPD officers have some college study with no degree.

Note: The educational requirement for New York police recruits include holding a high school diploma or GED equivalent, plus 60 college credits with a 2.0 GPA from an accredited college or university OR 2 years of full-time active military service in the United States Armed Forces with an honorable discharge and have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Some current officers may have been hired under different educational requirements as the requirements have changed over time.

Note: Bachelor Degree refers to Baccalaureate Degree. Diploma or GED refers to High School Graduate or High School Equivalent. No Diploma refers to Less Than High School Graduate. Masters, Law or PhD Candidate refers to Working Towards Masters Degree and Working Towards PhD and/or Law Degree.
