Research-Driven Change

Public safety investment must be driven by science, not speculation.

At the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice, we are rigorously testing how well the criminal justice system is working and using this research to refine and improve our approach.

  • We have a research unit staffed by data analysts who map how effectively our criminal justice system is fighting crime and reducing unnecessary incarceration.
  • We partner with researchers to run randomized control trials on innovative pilot programs to determine which should be scaled up citywide.
  • And we work with behavioral economists to develop "nudges" that can promote public safety in ways that do not require law enforcement resources.
