NYC DDC STEAM Initiatives Participates in LIC Spring!

On May 6th, the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) Community Partnerships and STEAM Initiatives participated in the third annual LIC Springs! The community block festival hosted by the LIC Partnership featured over 100 Long Island City businesses and organizations offering fun and free activities and over ten live performances by local talent.

Upwards of five-thousand people were in attendance and approximately 300 children participated in our activities. Families with children as young as 2 years-old participated in DDC’s “Wheel of STEAM,” where they answered STEAM-related questions to win a DDC prize.

DDC STEAM Initiatives team members also spoke to guests about DDC’s STEAM Initiatives and the agency’s goal of establishing a diverse and inclusive pipeline into fields such as architecture, engineering, and construction for the City’s youth in underserved communities. Coordinators distributed information about DDC’s College and High School Summer Internship Programs, two immersive programs that allow high school and college students to experience working at DDC in a STEAM related field. Students get professional development including, an outreach and voluntary training program provided by Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA), while also being mentored by senior staff members in the office and in the field.
