oversees agencies involved with criminal corrections related issues, including the NYC Department of Correction (DOC), the NYC Department of Probation, and the Board of Corrections. DOC manages 12 inmate facilities, 9 of which are located on Rikers Island. A significant part of Squad 1’s caseload includes investigation and arrest of corrections staff charged with violent assault, sexual assault, excessive force and contraband smuggling. Additionally, Squad 1 investigates financial crimes involving bribery of prison officials as well as systemic failures, such as poor hiring practices and inadequate medical care for inmates.
