Squad One

Squad 1 oversees agencies involved with criminal correction-related issues, including the City's Department of Correction (DOC), the NYC Department of Probation, and the Board of Corrections.   Squad 1's focus includes investigations of the destabilizing forces in the City's jail facilities, specifically contraband smuggling, bribery of officers by inmates and outside associates, the use of excessive force by correction staff, and violent assaults and sexual assault cases. Additionally, Squad 1 takes a systemic look at the operations of the Correction Department, finding potentially dangerous inefficiencies, like poor front-gate screening protocols, the abuse of City vehicle privileges, and incomplete and inadequate background checks for Correction Officers, and makes recommendations to ensure corruption vulnerabilities are removed and prevented.
