NYC EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT ANNOUNCES OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR JOHN D. SOLOMON FELLOWSHIP FOR PUBLIC SERVICE

February 3, 2015 —The New York City Office of Emergency Management announced the launch of the 2015-2016 John D. Solomon Fellowship for Public Service. Beginning today, interested candidates can apply to the city’s first student fellowship devoted specifically to emergency management. The program provides ten graduate students in the New York City area the opportunity to complete a nine-month, paid fellowship with a city agency or nonprofit organization.

Solomon Fellowship in emergency management," said Christina Farrell, Deputy Commissioner for External Affairs. "Having graduate-level fellows at City and nonprofit agencies focused on emergency preparedness brings much needed resources and a fresh perspective to a growing and vital discipline. We encourage students from all fields and backgrounds to apply."

Sponsored by NYC Emergency Management, the program was established in 2012 to honor the memory of the late John D. Solomon, an accomplished journalist and devoted public servant who was an active member of his local NYC Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and a passionate advocate of emergency preparedness and resilience. Through their work, fellows gain valuable, first-hand experience working with City agencies and nonprofits in the critical and growing field of emergency management. Tasks will range from educating the public about emergency preparedness to helping define the coordination role and practices during large-scale emergency responses. Fellows will also be given access to, and encouraged to complete, the New York City Office of Emergency Management certificate program.

"The John D. Solomon program was the best part of my graduate studies," said Anabella Aspiras, a former fellow who now works for NYC Emergency Management. "I was able to work on substantial public service projects knowing my contributions would one day have a lasting, positive effect on the New York City community. It was an honor to be surrounded by people and points of views which reinforced my dedication to a life of public service."

Applications must be received by midnight on Monday, March 30, 2015. Only completed applications will be considered. A completed application consists of a survey and a copy of your resume emailed to JDSolomonFellowship@oem.nyc.gov. Fellowship staff will confirm receipt of full application.
