S-56 Construction Site Fire Safety Manager

The S-56 Certificate of Fitness is required where a Site Safety Manager or Site Safety
Coordinator is required by the Building Code for a construction site. The Construction Site Fire Safety Manager (CSFSM) shall conduct an inspection of the construction site and all fire safety measures on at least a daily basis, and maintain a record when construction, demolition and alteration work is being conducted.

This Certificate of Fitness is valid only at a specific location and for the specific person to whom it is issued.

Before You Submit Your Application

You must pass a written exam to get a S-56 Certificate of Fitness. All applicants should review the Notice of Exam and Study Materials.

Following Documents Also Needed:

  • Proof that you have successfully completed a Construction Site Fire Safety Manager course from an FDNY certified school Certified Schools for Construction Site Fire Safety Manager
  • A completed Certificate of Fitness Application Form (PDF) 
    A completed and signed S-56 Application Form (PDF)
  • A letter of three years full time experience with in the past 6 years prior to the date of  
    application OR a Site Safety Manager or Site Safety Coordinator certificate issued by 
    Department of Buildings. Refer to the S-56 Application Form for detail. Sample of Recommendation Letter (PDF)
  • If required, a copy of your diploma or academic transcript.
  • Two forms of identification, at least one must be government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's license or a passport.

How to Apply for a Certificate of Fitness

Appointments are required for the S-56 COF exam. You must complete a Certificate of Fitness (COF) application (PDF), upload all required documents and pay online for the S-56 COF exam before scheduling an appointment. Without showing an online COF application ID, you cannot take the exam, and you will have to reschedule. Please use the Online Appointment Scheduler to make an appointment.
