FDNY Unveils New Brush Fire Units on Staten Island

July 19, 2016

On Tuesday, July 19, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro and Chief of Department James Leonard unveiled three new FDNY Brush Fire Units (BFU) on Staten Island.  These new additions to the FDNY fleet replace previous BFU apparatus damaged during Hurricane Sandy.

Joined by Staten Island Borough President James Oddo and FDNY Firefighters, the members of Engine 164 and Ladder 84 demonstrated the new units’ fire suppression capabilities.

Each $560,000 BFU includes a custom-designed body, onboard compressed air foam system, and the capability to pump 500 gallons of water per minute.  The 4-wheel drive vehicles feature military-type all-terrain tires, and an adjustable front bumper mounted turret with in-cab controls, allowing Firefighters to battle a fire from inside the vehicle using a joystick.

These new units will be strategically places on Staten Island, assigned to Engine Company 156, Engine Company 166/Ladder Company 86, and Engine Company 164/Ladder Company 84.

To date in 2016, FDNY members have fought 10 brush fires on Staten Island.  In 2015, there were 17 brush fires on Staten Island.
