FDNY Hosts 2nd Annual Women to Women Summit

May 14, 2018

On Monday, May 14, 2018, FDNY hosted the second annual Women to Women Summit, a day of professional development training for women. The event included several panels of guest speakers from various industries and ranks to inspire women professionals.

Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro welcomed everyone to the FDNY and underscored the great contributions made by women to the FDNY and city of New York.

“Today’s event is an extension of our efforts, as we work to empower the women within our ranks,” said Fire Commissioner Nigro.  “Our hope is that this summit benefits not only our FDNY family, but that it strikes a chord with each of you and helps you motivate and mentor other women – so that their contributions and goals and the next generation’s achievements and goals receive the recognition they deserve.”

The FDNY has hired record a number of female Firefighters and conducted an extensive recruitment and outreach strategy to make sure women and young girls know there are many careers available to them in the FDNY.

“I know part of the reason I’m lucky enough to be where I am is because of the fearless women who came before me many years ago and fought for rights that we all enjoy today,” said First Deputy Commissioner Laura Kavanagh. “We have all worked hard to be where we are, we’re leaders and experts, and it’s our job to pay it forward and engage with not only the young girls out there in our city, but also with the women in our agencies at any age, and help them navigate the landscape and ultimately empower them.”

The summit also included a highlight of women’s activism and empowerment, as well as a financial literacy workshop.
