Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro Presides over Fire Prevention Graduation

June 18, 2018

On Monday, June 18, 2018, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro presided over a Fire Prevention Inspector Graduation in Brooklyn.

“Our fire prevention inspectors are out every single day performing more than 200,000 visits to public, commercial and residential buildings to make sure our city’s tough fire code is carefully followed,” said Fire Commissioner Nigro. “The Bureau of Fire Prevention’s work has been critical to reducing the number of fire deaths in our city, year after year.”

For Fire Prevention Inspector Taja Marlow, making a difference as an inspector is personal. On March 25, 1990, a deliberately set fire at the illegal Happy Land social club in the Bronx claimed the lives of 87 people; her sister was one of the victims.

“My older sister tragically died in the Happy Land Fire in the Bronx in 1990,” said Fire Prevention Inspector Marlow. “I decided I wanted to prevent anyone else from feeling that kind of loss, I wanted to pay tribute to her and I’m glad I can start making a difference.”

The Bureau of Fire Prevention’s more than 300 Inspectors are extensively trained in inspection oversight and reporting. They are tasked with preventing fire conditions by enforcing the Fire Code and inspecting buildings, schools, businesses, construction sites and all areas of public assembly.

“Every structure in our diverse city owes a great deal of thanks to the hard work of the FDNY Bureau of Fire Prevention,” said Chief of Department James E. Leonard. “Our uniformed members in the field are very appreciative of the work of our inspectors and your efforts make a tremendous difference in our city each and every day.”

For Fire Prevention Inspector Rashed Zaman, the Department’s emphasis on teamwork attracted him to join the Bureau of Fire Prevention.
“We all understand the importance of the job and why we do what we do, we know that our job matters, the teamwork here is like no other,” said Fire Prevention Inspector Rashed Zaman. “I wanted to be part of something unified and I have found that at the FDNY.”

The Fire Prevention Inspector graduates will be assigned to units throughout the Bureau of Fire Prevention and will inspect locations throughout the city.
