Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment Unveils "James M. Nederlander Alley"

Breezeway off Great White Way honors late Broadway legend

NEW YORK – On November 8, Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) Commissioner Julie Menin proclaimed the New York Marriott Marquis breezeway as "James M. Nederlander Alley" in honor of the late Broadway giant. The newly-named alley is marked by a commemorative street sign on 46th Street, steps from Broadway and within sight of several Nederlander theatres.

"Jimmy Nederlander had a profound impact on Broadway, Times Square, and New York City," said Media and Entertainment Commissioner Julie Menin. "We are thrilled to honor him with this street renaming, and thank the Marriott Marquis and our partners at the Department of Transportation for working with us on this enduring tribute to him. It's only fitting that the theater district have a thoroughfare commemorating the impresario who brought to it so many historic productions."

"Make room, Lee and JJ Shubert," said James L. Nederlander, President of the Nederlander Organization, referring to the fact that Shubert Alley is directly south of the newly-named block. "Here's Jimmy. I know he's smiling upstairs watching all this fun."

"Jimmy Nederlander had an extraordinary impact on Broadway and commercial theatre around the world. His passion and support for the art and the people who make it was legendary," said Charlotte St. Martin, President of the Broadway League. "The 'Jimmys', or the National High School Musical Theatre Awards engages over 80,000 kids in over 1300 schools around the country and is building audiences, and developing future casts and staff for Broadway. This effort will be one of his lasting legacies to Broadway!"

James M. Nederlander, who passed away at the age of 94 on July 25, 2016, built one of the largest privately-held live entertainment companies in the world. During a career that spanned 75 years, "Jimmy Sr." amassed a network of theatres in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and London. The company's nine Broadway theatres include the Brooks Atkinson, Gershwin, Lunt-Fontanne, Marquis, Minskoff, Nederlander, Neil Simon, Richard Rodgers, and the Palace. Nederlander produced over 100 Broadway musicals and plays, including Annie, Applause, La Cage aux Folles, Me and My Girl, Nine, Noises Off, Peter Pan, Sweet Charity, The Will Rogers Follies, and Woman of the Year. The Nederlander Organization now encompasses venue ownership and management, theatrical producing, as well as concert presentation, merchandising, concessions and patron services.
