Addiction Treatment for Individuals with Disabilities: Rehab Centers for the Deaf and Blind
Addiction can be a harrowing experience for anyone. For those with a sensory disability such as Deaf, Hard of Hearing, blind or low vision, this experience can be even more daunting. Hearing Loss Association of America- NYC Chapter (HLAA-NYC)
HLAA-NYC is an extension of the national organization, the Hearing Loss Association of America, which has been a nationally recognized leader in education and advocacy for forty years. At chapter meetings, in addition to learning from audiologists about hearing aids and assistive devices, members discover ways to engage in cultural opportunities, such as theater, movies, and museums. Other educational topics include rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act, transit accessibility, emergency and safety procedures. In short, the meetings are an opportunity to improve the ability to cope with the challenges of hearing loss. Of great importance is the camaraderie and social engagement that meetings provide, something often missing in the lives of those who do not have normal hearing. This education is critical to the ability to lead full lives and to avoid the health consequences that often accompany hearing loss.
The chapter has also actively engaged in advocacy on issues that affect those with hearing loss, including captioning and installation of hearing loops in public areas such as the courts, governmental meeting rooms, theaters, and movies. During the Covid-19 pandemic, communication in hospitals has been a particular focus of advocacy efforts. Recently, we have also advised the police department on ways to meet the communications needs of the public.
