School Safety Agents Training

Training

School Safety Agents are assigned to the Police Academy for up to 17 weeks. Training topics include law, police science, behavioral science and physical training.

School Safety Agents:

  • Start receiving pay and benefits from their first day of recruit training
  • Can receive up to 26 college credits for their Police Academy training (restrictions apply depending on the college)

Physical Agility Test

The School Safety physical agility test measures performance on simulated physical tasks that are both either frequently encountered by, or critical to the position of a School Safety Agent. The test consists of two events:

  • Event #1: Simulated emergency response/detain
  • 15 minute break
  • Event #2: Simulated stair climb/victim rescue

Apprenticeship Program

The New York City Police Department School Safety Division is a registered participant of the Apprenticeship Training Program with the New York State Department of Labor. In order to qualify for apprenticeship a School Safety Agent must complete the training academy as well as on the job training. If both these qualifications are met, then upon completion of two years of service, the agent will receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship from the New York Department of Labor.
