Release of Body Camera Footage from a Police-Involved Firearm Discharge that Occurred on January 29, 2018

Today, the New York City Police Department released body camera footage captured by two police officers involved in a shooting on January 29, 2018. The officers responded at 7:40 p.m. to a 911 call of a male stabbed at 2131 Prospect Avenue, in the confines of the 48th Precinct. As the officers arrived at East 181st Street and Prospect Avenue, they were informed that a male, armed with a knife, was chasing another male in the street. The officers then encountered a male in the street who was armed with a combat-style knife. The officers confronted the male and repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife. The male turned towards the officers with the knife in his hand. The two officers discharged their firearms, striking the male. The male was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. A combat-style knife was recovered at the scene. The male was later identified as Michael Hansford, 52, of 2131 Prospect Avenue, Bronx, NY.
