Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Program partners: Citizens for NYC, FDNY, NYPD and the American Red Cross

Mission

The CERT program is designed to train neighborhood and community based volunteer teams that will: inform, educate and train their neighbors on disaster preparedness; assist public safety agencies and local community boards with public events; respond to locally occuring disasters by strictly following CERT protocol and supporting emergency personnel upon their arrival and request; and assist agencies in managing spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site.

Eligibility

Participants must be at least 18 years of age and a resident of New York City (CERT teams are designated within your own community board).

Participants must be willing to subject themselves to a background security clearance check

Training

Ready New York- introduction to CERT, fire safety, light search and rescue- disaster medical operations 1 and ii, American Red Cross-disaster mental health curriculum.

Participants must commit to the 11 week training program, be active, volunteer and attend all specified classes.
