Welcome to the NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS). Each day, we build a more vibrant and inclusive economy by helping to strengthen and grow the careers, businesses, and neighborhoods that are so important to New Yorkers.
Mayor de Blasio has tasked City agencies with a singular charge: to fight inequality and create a city where everyone has the opportunity to rise together. SBS supports small businesses as they start, operate, and grow. We train prospective employees with in-demand skills and help them to land quality jobs with growth potential. We foster thriving neighborhoods by actively investing in neighborhood organizations to build stronger business communities and improve commercial corridors.
This past year, my team has worked tirelessly to promote economic growth and opportunity. We have served more than 9,400 businesses, including more than 1,500 immigrant entrepreneurs. We hit a record high in certifying more than 5,000 minority and women-owned enterprises, putting us ahead of schedule to reach 9,000 City-certified M/WBEs by 2019. We successfully connected more than 25,000 New Yorkers with quality employment and 4,000 New Yorkers with the training needed to advance their careers. And we invested more than $130 million in community-based organizations to further improve our City's neighborhoods.
It is truly a privilege to lead an agency that helps to build a thriving economy, and opens doors to opportunity for every New Yorker. It's what we do.
