Disciplinary Cases

In an effort to enhance construction safety on work sites throughout the City, the Department hired over 140 new inspectors in calendar year 2016, quadrupled fines for safety lapses, and undertook a massive proactive enforcement sweep. As a result of these enhanced measures, NYC Buildings inspectors issued 54,407 ECB violations in 2016 to buildings and construction sites across NYC; well above the 49,213 ECB violations that were issued in 2015. During this same period of time, the City collected $68,092,866 in penalties from ECB violations, a 62% increase from the $42,024,529 in collected penalties from 2015.

Did You Know

NYC Buildings provides homeowners with digital Tool Kits on our website, supplying information on Department regulations and advice on common home improvement projects, such as kitchen renovations, property fences, curb cuts and porches.

These Tool Kits help guide homeowners with a quick overview of these smaller projects, including details on when a NYC Buildings permit is required for the job and which construction professionals are necessary to hire in order to proceed with the work.

Have more questions? Homeowners can also stop by our weekly Homeowners' Night events, held every Tuesday, 4pm-7pm at the Department's Borough Offices. NYC Buildings experts will be on hand to discuss a number of topics, including how to proceed with these home improvement projects.
