New Safety Training Requirements Are in Effect

Reminder: Beginning March 1st construction workers on various types of work sites will be required to have OSHA 10-hour safety training.

The Department of Buildings is actively working with a coalition of other City agencies, including the Mayor's Community Affairs Unit, the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs, and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant affairs to raise awareness about the new requirements with members of the construction and buildings trades through a multifaceted campaign that includes direct outreach and distribution of flyers in English and Spanish, messages on social media channels, stories in local and ethnic media outlets and ads on bus shelters. DOB has issued several service notices to members of the industry, and is also providing in-person trainings on compliance with the law and detailed information on our website.

If you are a construction worker still in need of training, see the US Department of Labor for a list of online OSHA-certified courses. Free and reduced-cost training programs are also being provided by a number of NYC nonprofits. Info on these programs is available in English and Spanish.

DOB Celebrates Black History Month with Student Exhibition on Black Design Professionals

February is Black History Month, and to celebrate DOB hosted a three-day exhibition to recognize the important contributions Black design professionals have made to our built environment. We invited students from the Williamsburg High School of Architecture and Design to showcase their artwork, which consisted of building renderings, a CAD Drawing (computer-aided designs), and a brief description of the professional who created the design. Featured architects included Robert Robinson Taylor, the first accredited African-American architect, and designer of several of the buildings at Tuskegee University as well as Cornell University’s Sage Hall; Paul Williams, who designed a number of notable public buildings in Los Angeles, as well as several of Hollywood’s most famous private homes; and Chicago-based architect and urban planner Wendell Jerome Campbell who founded the National Organization of Minority Architects, and whose premier projects include the DuSable Museum of African American History.
