More about the Citywide Participatory Budgeting Process:

As a reminder, the People's Money is NYC's first Citywide Participatory Budgeting program run by the NYC Civic Engagement Commission. All New Yorkers ages 11 and up, regardless of immigration status, will decide how to spend $5 million on expense projects.

  • In Phase 1 "Idea Generation" [September - November 2022], the CEC and our partner CBOs held 523 community conversations across the city for residents to brainstorm ideas for expense projects. Residents also proposed ideas online. A total of 2,023 ideas were submitted for the borough process and 2,116 ideas were submitted for the local equity neighborhood process.
  • In Phase 2 "Project Evaluation and Selection" [December - February 2023], for the borough process, the CEC convened five Borough Assembly Committees made up of residents who applied online or in idea generation sessions to represent their borough. Over the course of January and February, the committees evaluated projects submitted for the borough process using criteria to ensure equity, need, and feasibility. The projects they selected are the projects on each borough ballot. Our TRIE neighborhood partners led a similar neighborhood level process for their neighborhood ballots, forming coalitions who narrowed down those ballots.
  • Currently, the CEC is in Phase 3 "Ballot Creation" [March - April 2023]. We are translating the projects into the top Local Law 30 languages of the boroughs and neighborhoods, and preparing the online voting system and paper ballots for Phase 4 "Voting Period" [May - June 2023], of which the exact dates are to be announced.
  • After the voting period, in Phase 5 "Project Implementation" [July 2023 - June 2024], we will announce the projects with the most votes and fund organizations to implement those projects. The CEC will monitor implementation.
