Batteries containing toxic substances cannot be discarded in the regular garbage or recycling. Alkaline batteries can be discarded with regular garbage because they are not listed as a hazardous waste.

Common Types of Batteries:

  • Alkaline batteries
  • Dry batteries
  • Lead-acid batteries
  • Lithium batteries (including ion batteries)
  • Nickel cadmium (NiCad) batteries
  • Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries
  • Wet batteries
  • Silver-zinc batteries

Call2Recycle collects and recycles many types of batteries at no cost.

Mayoral agencies should use the Agency Safe Handling contract for batteries not accepted by Call2Recycle.

Non-mayoral agencies and nonprofits should hire a certified vendor to handle batteries not accepted by Call2Recycle.

Visit the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation website for additional information about battery recycling.
